Everything you wanted to know about mahjong.

Questions about the game, the gifts, and everything in between.

What is mahjong and how do you play?+

Mahjong is a tile-based game that originated in China during the Qing dynasty and has been played worldwide for over a century. The most common version played in the United States is American mahjong, which uses 152 tiles and is played with four players. Each player draws and discards tiles to build a winning hand based on a card of combinations that changes annually. The game combines strategy, memory, and a healthy amount of trash talk.

What is the difference between American and Chinese mahjong?+

American mahjong uses a standardized card of winning combinations published annually by the National Mah Jongg League and includes joker tiles. Chinese mahjong uses 144 tiles and relies on universal hand patterns rather than a card. The two versions have different rules, tile counts, and strategies, though the core mechanic of drawing, discarding, and building hands is shared. Most sets sold in the US are designed for American play.

What comes in a mahjong set?+

A standard American mahjong set includes 152 tiles (including 8 jokers), four racks for holding your tiles, and typically comes in a carrying case. Our Boyar Gifts mahjong sets are full playing sets and come in seven exclusive designs. If you are new to the game, you will also want to pick up a current National Mah Jongg League card separately, as the winning combinations change each year.

Is mahjong a good gift?+

One of the best. A mahjong set is the kind of gift that gets used for decades and becomes part of someone's family rituals. For someone who already plays, our accessories collection covers everything from the $30 soap set to the $95 throw pillow. Not sure where to start? The Mahjong Beaded Coin Purse at $45 is our most popular gift item. We ship nationwide from our West Village store in New York City.

Do you ship mahjong sets?+

Yes. We ship all mahjong sets and accessories nationwide. Orders over $75 qualify for free shipping. You can also visit us in person at our West Village location in New York City if you would like to see the sets before you buy.

How long does it take to learn mahjong?+

Most people can get through a full game of American mahjong within one or two sessions of learning. The basics, drawing and discarding tiles to match combinations on the card, are straightforward. Becoming genuinely good at reading the table and playing strategically takes longer, which is part of why people play for years. Our Mahjong Book is a great starting point for anyone new to the game.
